Liu wei is a contemporary chinese artist working in many types of media including installation video drawing painting and sculpture.

Some of his projects include the purple air 2011 2012 series of oil paintings that depict stylized skyscrapers and indigestion ii a model of human excrement made from tar. Rather liu perceives the artist s function as a responsibility of unmitigated uncensored expression tied to neither ideology nor form.
Liu wei s practice is uniquely varied. After graduating liu wei quickly became known as a prominent figure in china s cynical realism movement. Liu uses computer software for generating pixels and patterns after which the paint is applied on the canvas by the workers in his beijing studio who are without any knowledge about art whatsoever. Working in video installation drawing sculpture and painting there is no stylistic tendency which ties his work together.
In liu wei s well known painting new generation 1990 the infant figures of the artist and his brother are sitting in front of a large image of mao zedong but looking away from it.
